The Wellman-Union Lady Cats basketball team will travel over to Whiteface Tuesday evening Jan. 11, 2022, with a 6:15 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Cats come into the game 10-5, 1-0 in district since Loop forfeited their game last Friday. Whiteface Lady Lopes is the favorite to win the district this year, however, due to some injuries, Whiteface will need to play solid ball to win district again. They come into the game with a 6-11 record and 1-0 after their win over Whitharral Friday night 35-25.

Lady Cats Coach Landry Kidd said, “The district is wide open for the taking. The Lady Cats need to go in this game with the mindset that they can beat them. Last season is well behind us, and now it’s time to play and play hard against a good team.”
Whiteface has some young players, so the Lady Cats will need to exploit those issues. Sr. Madyson Horton and Sr. Gracen Gore will both lead the team out on the court for their last first district game. In order for the Lady Cats to cash in on a district win against the Lady Lopes, they’ll need a great performance from Horton and Gore on defense and they’ll need to make their layups and threes. Juniors Kenzie Harp and Kayley Cavazos will also need to show up in this game with their speed, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Harp has been a lead point scorer in certain games in the past, so she’ll need to repeat this in the game. Look for Cavazos to draw a couple of charges.

Junior Cameron Resendez is by far the tallest player in the district will most likely be fouled the most as she crashes the board, she’ll need to make her shots and be able to make the three-point play the old fashion way by getting all of her free throws. Sophomore Sadie Crowley will be a huge help as well as she needs to make her jump and floater shots, plus her defensive skills will be needed as well. The keys to this game are pressure and free throws. If the Lady Cats can frustrate Whiteface, they’ll be able to come home with a 2-0 district record.
