The Wellman-Union Lady Cats got their second district win in row, beating Aspermont in five sets 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-9. This second district win come on the heels of some unfortunate news that the team received last Thursday. The Lady Cats had to forfeit their previous two wins against Loop and Rotan due to an ineligible player. According to Wellman-Union Superintendent Ben Prowell, the ineligibility was due to transfer policies, and when it was realized WUISD took action and made the forfeits self imposed. Prior to the forfeits, the Lady Cats were sitting in third place with a strong possibility of going to the playoffs. However, when they gave those two wins back to Loop and Rotan, they found themselves in fourth place behind Loop, and now needing to win to get back into contention to go to the playoffs.
The Lady Cats did just that with a three set sweep over Ropes, 25-6, 25-20, 25-12 on Saturday Oct 9, 2021 and Tuesday night’s win over Aspermont. In the first set, the Lady Cats found themselves down 13-17, however came back and won 25-18. The next set was back and forth, but with a few missed serves and kills from the Lady Hornets, they would end up losing the second set 25-20. The third set was tale of two teams with Wellman-Union. The Lady Cats served ten straight points, leading Aspermont 10-0. However, the Lady Hornets would not go away, and fought hard to make it a game, however the Lady Cats took the third set 25-20. In the fourth set it was like the first ,but this time it was in favor of the Lady Hornets with them winning 25-18. The would setup a fifth set which goes to 15 points. The Lady Cats rallied in the first five points leading 5-0. Asspermont would make a small comeback, but the Lady Cats were too much for them, winning 15-9.
This win now puts Wellman-Union back in the drivers seat for the post season. With three games left to play in district action, the best they can do is get runner-up. However they will need to win their last three games and will need Aspermont to lose at least one in order to be tied for the runner-up position. If Aspermont loses more than one and Wellman-Union wins out, then they go in as the 2nd seed. If both Loop and Wellman-Union lose out, the Lady Cats are still in at the 3rd seed. In the Lady Cats last three games they will host Plains this Saturday Oct. 16 at 4:00 p.m., then they travel over to Klondike on Tuesday Oct. 19 at 6:00 p.m., and their final game will be at home and it will be Senior Night on Tuesday Oct. 26 at 6:00 p.m.
