The Commissioners Court met in regular session on Monday, February 29, where they addressed their weekly agenda.

Before the discussion of the agenda started Judge Jim Barron introduced Rex Murphy who is the TxDot representative in Yoakum County. Murphy updated the Commissioners on road supplies that are on hand just outside of Brownfield. He noted that the material needed to be moved before early May.

Murphy also thanked the Commissioners for all their help during the last December snow storm in helping keep the roads cleared.

Criminal District Attorney Bill Helwig addressed the Court concerning updates in the courtroom. The biggest item was a new 75 inch TV that would help to identify items crucial to criminal court cases. He cited one recent case where a more clear view of crucial evidence might have led to a different verdict from the jury had it been more visible.

Along with the new 75 inch TV another TV will also be placed behind the jury box for better viewing by the entire courtroom.

The Court then approved up to $4,000 to take care of these items.

In Helwig’s next item he asked the Court to approve a grant for the purchase of a Drone. The Drone can be very instrumental in the investigation of car accidents where they can go from one point to the point of the accident, take pictures, and return to the home port with the pictures.

The Commissioners approved a grant resolution for the CDA office.

In the next item the Commissioners listened to a report from Zack Holbrooks with the South Plains Health District on subdivision regulations. He concentrated on the placements of water wells in relation to the location of septic tanks. He said those involved in the digging of the water wells know that all wells should be at least 50 feet away from the septic tank.

Yoakum County Agrilife Agent Bubba Lamolinare was also in attendance where he gave his monthly report to the Commissioners. He noted he had a very busy month attending many stock shows with students from both Plains and Denver City. The one he enjoyed most of all was in San Antonio. He said since this is first year to attend these shows he learned a lot from each show.

He also said he is getting several phone calls concerning the care of lawns and trees with the spring time of the year approaching. Lamolinare also said the county agent from Morton has volunteered her time to come down and help the 4H students with projects former agent Becky Wagner had started that he has no experience in, especially the photographer part.

Commissioners Woody Lindsey, Ray Marion, Ty Earl Powell, and Tim Addison along County Judge Jim Barron were in attendance.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, March 7 at 10 am in the County Courthouse.
