Early voting for three offices will get underway on Monday, May 16, and will continue until Friday, May 20. Election Day will be on Tuesday, May 24.

The special election came about because of no one in three elections receiving a majority of the votes to win the election.

Jerry Howard and David Bryant are both still vying for the Sheriff’s position after current Sheriff Don Corzine announced he was not running for re-election. In the first election held on March 1 Howard received 641 votes, which represented 40.7% of the votes while Bryant received 542 votes, which was 34.4% of the votes.

Also running in that election was Brad Taylor, who received 343 votes, and Raymond Sanchez with 48 votes.

Another runoff on the local scene involves Precinct 3 where Tommy Box and Joe Martinez and both seeking to be the Commissioner of that Precinct. In the March 1 Box was the top vote getter with 184 (49.7%) and Martinez received 96 votes (25.9%). Also running for the Commissioners position was Chris Blundell who had 90 votes (24.3%).

Commissioner Ty Earl Powell also announced earlier he would not be seeking another term of office.

And the third runoff election involves U.S. House, District 19, Representative between Jodey Arrington and Glenn Robertson. Those two beat out a field of nine candidates in the March 1 primary election. In that election Robertson held the edge over Arrington by less than one percent. Robertson had 27,868 (26.8%) votes compared to Arrington who had 27,013 (25.9%).

Making up District 19 are the counties of Parmer, Castro, Bailey, Lamb, Hale, Floyd, Crosby, Lubbock, Hockley, Cochran, Yoakum, Gaines, Terry, Lynn, Borden, Howard, Garza, Kent, Scurry, Stonewall, Fisher, Nolan, Taylor, Jones, Haskell, Throckmorton, Young, Shackelford and Stephens Counties.

This seat became available when incumbent Randy Neugebauer chose to retire at the end of the current 114th Congressional session.

Early voting in Denver City will be held in the Tax Office on the corner of 4th and Avenue B and in Plains will be in the County Clerk’s office. Election Day voting will be held at the temporary building at the site of the former Community Building on 15th street in Denver City and at the Community Building in Plains.
