The Texas State Library & Archives Commission as well as the American Library Association (ALA) are celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Children’s Day, Book Day/El dia de los ninos, El dia de los libros” in the Lone Star State, officially on April 30. According to the website, dia.ala.org, Dia, as it’s commonly known, is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. Committed to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages, and cultures, Dia day connects families and communities to a world of learning through books, stories, and libraries, encouraging BOOKJOY!

Yoakum County Library in Plains will combine it’s Dia day with ALA’s National Library Week (April 10-16) and have a StoryTime dedicated to literacy! On Wednesday, April 13, come join the group of ALL ages at 10 AM to hear a reading of the 2016 Newberry Medal winner, Coretta Scott King Honor Award, and Caldecott Honor Book “Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt delaPena. “Never Take a Shark to the Dentist” and “NO T-rex in the Library” are also on the agenda, along with a fun time of singing.

For parents who are interested in recommended reading, the Texas Library Association has a recommended reading list as well as parent-child activity guides for ages 2 through grade 2 at txla.org/groups/2×2
