Harvesting a Good Book!

Yoakum County Library in Plains harvested a tractor-load of good books for StoryTime on Thursday, October 11, 2018! The group was smaller but still smiley! Those in attendance included Kaylin, Henry, Lena, Benny, Nellie, and Reid.  The flags and calendar were discussed, as well as numbers. The group retrieved the egg shakers to sing “Popcorn Kernels” and discussed seeds briefly.

To begin the time, tractors were discussed with a portion of the book “Harvest Time” being read. The children transitioned with a felt interaction about different kinds and colors of vehicle transportation. The Lego® book “Work This Farm” helped the children identify different kinds and colors of farm machines like tractors and combines.

The book “The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash” was a fun read about a class field trip to a farm. After the story was over, the children used felt squares to give their ribbon “snake” a coat, similar to the book. The efforts helped the children develop their fine motor skills, and they will be able to practice at home since their snake went home with each child!

The video clip, “Paw Patrol: Pups Save the Corn Roast,” entertained the children with a combination of next week’s fire safety theme and this week’s the harvest theme. After reminders and invitations to the Plains ISD’s book fair (Oct. 12-19) were handed out, the group dismissed with the rhyme “Wave High.”

All ages are welcome at the Family StoryTime, which meets weekly at the Yoakum County Library in Plains at 10:30 AM each Thursday. On Thursday, Oct. 18, the Plains Volunteer Fire Dept will join the group to discuss fire safety. The children will get to see a fire truck up close and also meet the friendly heroes in uniform. We invite all to attend.
