The Yoakum County Library in Plains began the December Storytime series with some holly jolly fun on Wednesday, Dec. 2, and followed it up with a discussion about the month, as well as the “Days of the Week” song and pledges to the United States and Texas flags. The group also enjoyed rattling jingle sticks to the tune of “Jingle Bells.” The children and caregivers also sang “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” complete with hand motions.

With the morning theme of Christmas trees, the boardbook “10 Trim-the-Tree’ers” started the youngsters in the decorating direction. Those in attendance were Nathan and Jadon McAdams; Johan Neudorf; Elijah, Abigale, Ben, and Gershom McAdams; Jordy Bell; Ethan Moya; and Penny Landry. “If You Take a Mouse to the Movies” was another entertaining read about ornaments adorning a tree. The last book, “Room for a Little One,” was full of gentle animals in the manger stable.

Each child then chose from a wide variety of blank wooden ornaments—some of them Christmas trees, some of them animals—to paint and take home to decorate their own tree. The month of December is special because there are door prize drawings weekly instead of monthly. The winner for this week was Johan Neudorf, who won “The Last Christmas Tree.” To close the program, all the children gathered to watch a short, classic section of Mickey Mouse and “Pluto’s Christmas Tree.”

Children of all ages are encouraged to attend Storytime with their caregivers. The group meets 10 a.m. everyWednesday during the school year.

The Yoakum County Library will also host a cookies and a movie event 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15. The movie being presented will be “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Bring a pillow or a blanket and enjoy the festivities as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this classic movie. Caregivers are welcome to stay.
