More questions to help you tell your stories to your children. Remember to journal your answers so your children will know about who you are and learn more about their family history. Tell your stories!

  1. Was anyone in your family superstitious? What were some sayings that your mother or father had that you remember?

2. Did anyone in your family do handiwork? Or woodwork? Was anyone particularly creative?

3. Was your family considered rich or poor or middle class? Were times ever tough for you growing up? Did you have to go without things that your friends had? Was this difficult for you? Who handled the money in your house growing up?

4. When you think of your parents, what are they wearing? Were they fancy dressers? Or did they always have on work clothes? Can you remember a perfume your mother wore or an after shave your father always wore? What smells make you think of your parents?

5. Do you have a piece of furniture or family heirloom that belonged to your parents or your grandparents?

6. When you think back about your mother and father, what do you realize about their lives that you did not understand growing up? Do you think they were happy with the circumstances of their lives?

7. What did your home look like? Can you remember the view out any of your windows? Did you have a room of your own?

8. What do you remember about your kitchen when you were growing up? Can you still describe the cabinets and maybe what was hanging on the walls? Was it a warm place to be?

9. Were your parents interested in the news? Did they get a daily newspaper? Do you remember hearing them talk about anything going on in the news?

10. Did your family read? Were the books available around your house? What magazines can you remember seeing your parents read? What books do you remember reading as a child?
