The Cubs Football Ready For The Mules

by Eric

The 4-0 Brownfield Cubs football squad returned home last Friday night being 5-0 after their huge win over 4-0 (now 4-1) Littlefield 28-14. In a classic 3A matchup where the game-winning points came in the fourth quarter, Brownfield has found themselves successful and certainly making noise here on the South Plains and Coach Flores receiving the Dave Campbells Texas Football Class 3A Coach of the Week. Folks… that’s what some would call success.

Although the Cubs are 5-0 on the season, there is still one non-district and four district games left on the schedule, and the next two games are away back-to-back, and by the end of those two away games, the Cubs technically will have had three back-to-back-to-back away games, which is not really typical for high school football. So most likely the players will feel the pressure when they get to their first district game on the third away game in a row. But for now, Brownfield will need to focus on the second away game in a row which is their bi-district foe from last season Muleshoe.

Last season the Cubs and the Mules met up in the first round of the playoffs, and unfortunately, Brownfield felt the sting of a 21-17 loss and it was time to roll out the basketballs. So in the minds of Coach Flores and company, revenge is at hand. The Mules are sitting at 4-1 on the season, which their only loss came in week one against highway 84 rival Littlefield 28-7. Since then the Mules have won four straight games winning over Lamesa 41-14, over Friona 39-21, over Tulia 37-20, and a decent win over Abernathy 27-20.

Like last week, the Cubs will only focus on this game and this game only. The Mules are averaging almost 31 points a game, which is ok. Brownfield on the other hand continues to rack up points averaging almost 44 points a game. Last week was the first time the Cubs had not scored over 35 points. Both teams have two teams in common. Littlefield and Tulia. The Cubs beat both teams, Tulia 35-7 and Littlefield 28-14, whereas Muleshoe lost to Littlefield 28-7 (in week 1) and beat Tulia 37-20. One thing Brownfield showed versus Littlefield, is that their defense is a force to be reckoned with. The Cub’s defense has been allowing around 15 points a game and Muleshoe’s defense has allowed 20 points a game.

One thing for sure is the Cub’s offense is hitting on all cylinders. Brownfield posted a total of 505 offensive yards against Littlefield which is huge considering only 21 points came from the offense. The Cubs will continue to play fast and most likely through the air against Muleshoe. The defense will surely show up again to curb the momentum that the Mules have had in the past four weeks. By the time district action rolls around next week, the Cubs should be 6-0.

Brownfield Cubs 42, Muleshoe Mules 14

The Brownfield Cubs football team travels to Muleshoe Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, with 7:00 pm kickoff.
