The 2016-2017 cheerleading high school squads were recently announced following tryouts last week.

The tryouts were conducted in front of the student body, faculty, and judges.

The eight-member squads will cheer at all the football and basketball games next year.

Making up the varsity cheerleaders will be Jesus Anaya, Erica Baker, Nidia Ceniceros, Jessica Delgado, Joselin Garcia, Leslie Prieto, Lindsey Sanchez, and Jewel Santillan.

Members of the junior varsity squad will be Damaris Andrade, Alazey Mishleau, Ailin Ortega, Mariana Polanco, Annisten Sandlin, Jerzey Andrae (Taff), Brenda Valdiva (Corral), and Johnna Villarreal.

In determining the new cheerleaders the Judges count 60% of the total vote. The candidates are judged on 5 categories; entrance, jump combination, two cheers and a dance. Each category is worth 10 points.

The teachers’ vote count 25% and the student body vote counts 15%.

Following this the scores are tabulated and then ranked. This year 8 cheerleaders were chosen for both the varsity and junior varsity squad.

Practices took place two weeks prior to tryouts. Of these practices candidates are required to attend at least 3 sessions since many of the kids are involved with other activities. During these session the current senior cheerleaders instruct them on the two cheers, dance, entrances and jumps.

“We want to give a special thanks to Sierra Tovar who came every day to help these candidates prepare,” sponsor Janet Gibson said. “She is the only 4 year cheerleader we had this year. We also would like to recognize our other senior cheerleader, Syxx Yzaguirre. These two provided outstanding leadership all year.”

As a fund raiser the newly elected cheerleaders will be selling Top-o-Texas magazine ads and also cookie dough to raise funds for their summer camp to be held in June. To purchase an ad or the cookie dough you may contact one of the cheerleaders.

The cheerleading sponsors are Jennifer Galvan and Janet Gibson.
