Lady Raider defeat No.25 Texas for the 3rd year in a row!

by Bryan Moran

Make it a three-peat!

Behind 28 points from Bre’Amber Scott and another 13-point performance from freshman Jasmine Shavers, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders downed No. 25 Texas, 68-64 in front of a juiced-up crowd of 5,604.

With the victory, Texas Tech (15-4, 3-3 Big 12) has now recorded a win over UT in three consecutive seasons for just the fourth time in program history, while Coach Krista Gerlich joined her mentor Marsha Sharp and Kristy Curry as the only three head coaches in Tech history to defeat UT in three straight years.

As has been the key all season long, Tech won the points in the paint, 24-22.  The Lady Raiders are now 14-0 when holding teams to under 30 points in the paint.

Another key stat on Wednesday came in free throws. Tech shot 22-of-30 while UT shot just 2-of-6. Tech improved to 6-0 when hitting 20+ free throws and has now made 20 in back-to-back games.

In the end, Tech did not trail over the final 29:26 of play. UT’s final lead of the ballgame came with 9:35 to go in the second.

Tech has now won back-to-back Big 12 games for the first time since the 2020-21 season and improved to 3-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

Texas placed three in double figures led by DePaul transfer Sonya Morris who dropped 17 points. Preseason All-American Rori Harmon added 12 points, nine assists, and six rebounds while National Player of the Week Shaylee Gonzales managed just 10 points on 13 shots.

Gonzales scored seven of her 10 in the first half and was named USBWA Player of the Week earlier this week after the Horns defeated then No. 25 KU and No. 15 Iowa State.

By virtue of tonight’s victory, Tech sits at 15-4 through 19 games and has defeated three top-25 NET teams: Texas (10), Middle Tennessee (16), and Colorado (21).
